Here, we de-bunk five of the most common misconceptions, so to better understand the role that physiotherapy plays in transforming lives.
Misconception 1: Torture Sessions
We all understand that when you are in pain or need help with an injury, the last thing you want is added pain. The aim of physiotherapy is to provide relief from this pain and stiffness, and get you moving comfortably as quickly as possible. Some patients may experience soreness after a session, but this is normal and will usually subside within a 48-72-hour period. It’s important to remember there is a difference between soreness and pain.
Misconception 2: Generic, Take Home Exercises
Physiotherapists are highly trained in areas of exercise rehabilitation and are skilled in creating customised treatments to cater for medical conditions and musculoskeletal injuries, which includes bones, muscles and joints. While the exercise programs are designed to be completed at home or gym, your physiotherapist will go through the exercises thoroughly during your session, and tailor them to your individual issues.
Misconception 3: Care is only about accidents and injuries
It’s very common for people to only think of visiting a physiotherapist if they are recovering from a serious accident or surgery, but this is not always the case. A physiotherapy session involves more than just addressing pain, it is about prevention as well. Diagnosing movement and function problems before they become debilitating issues will save you time and money in the future and help keep your body in check.
Misconception 4: Same as Massage Therapy
Physiotherapy is much more than simply a massage; it is a focused treatment with a thorough approach. While patients are likely to receive a massage during their session, the treatment has a specific purpose. In comparison to masseuses, physiotherapists diagnose, asses and gather information through clinical thought to help determine the cause of your pain and how to fix it.
Misconception 5: Treatments take too long
The hands-on approach of physiotherapy requires thorough thought and investigation, but our physiotherapists are trained in order to achieve what is needed in order to make a great start within the allocated 30 minute sessions. However, if you wish for longer sessions then this can be arranged if requested ahead of time. In the pursuit for better movement and pain relief, this is a short amount of time, especially when many of our patients have had pain and disability for weeks or months before they make their first consultation.
